Gangasagar (Ganga Sagar) Island is at a distance of about 100 km south of Kolkata city. This island, also known as Sagardwip, is a place of Hindu pilgrimage. Every year on the day of Makar Sankranti (14 January), hundreds of thousands of Hindus gather to take a holy bath at the confluence of river Hoogly(Ganges) and the Bay of Bengal to offer puja in the Kapil Muni Ashram(Temple).
