Netaji Bhawan is situated at 38/2, Elgin Road (now Lala Lajpat Rai Sarani) in Kolkata. The house was built by Netaji’s father, Janakinath Bose, and served as the family residence.
This house is historically significant because it was from here that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose made his famous escape in January 1941, evading British surveillance to seek support for India’s independence abroad.
On the night of January 16, 1941, Netaji, under house arrest by the British authorities, made a daring escape from this house disguised as a Pathan, Mohammad Ziauddin. He embarked on a perilous journey across India and Afghanistan to reach Germany, where he sought the assistance of the Axis powers in India's fight for freedom.
Netaji Bhawan, also known as the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Home & Museum, is a historic landmark located in Kolkata, West Bengal. This site was the ancestral home of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, one of India's most revered freedom fighters and a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. The house has been converted into a museum and research center, preserving the legacy of Netaji and his contributions to India's struggle for independence.

The museum displays a rich collection of artifacts, photographs, documents, and personal belongings of Netaji, chronicling his life, his role in the Indian National Army (INA), and his efforts toward India’s independence.
The museum contains a fascinating collection of Netaji’s personal belongings, including his uniforms, medals, books, and letters. There are photographs and documents that showcase his life, from his early days as a student in Kolkata to his role as the leader of the Indian National Army (INA) and his activities during World War II.
The museum also displays Netaji’s car, the German-made Wanderer W24, which he used during his daring escape from British house arrest in 1941.
